It’s one of the most common questions we get: if every key is gone, is the car stuck forever? No. Your vehicle carries its own identity — a code tied to the VIN and to the locks themselves — and that’s enough for a properly equipped locksmith to create a working key. The metal is only half the job; the other half is convincing your car to accept it.
Every vehicle leaves the factory with a key code that matches the cuts in its locks. With the VIN and proof of ownership, that code can be retrieved and a fresh blade cut to it. On some vehicles we skip the code entirely and read the door lock or ignition directly to work out the cuts. Either way, the result is a key that fits the mechanical side perfectly.
A key that fits will open your doors and turn in the ignition, and the engine still won’t start. Since the late 1990s nearly every vehicle has an immobilizer that looks for a chip it recognizes. That chip has to be programmed to your specific car. This is why a hardware-store copy is useless on a modern vehicle, and why programming equipment matters more than the cutting machine.
