There’s a backup built in – and it usually gets you moving in under a minute.
You press the start button and get nothing, or a message saying no key is detected. Before assuming the worst: almost every push-to-start vehicle has a backup that works even with a completely dead fob battery. There is a passive chip inside your fob that needs no power at all — it just has to get close enough to the reader.
If the doors won’t unlock, your fob has a hidden metal key. Look for a small slider or release button on the back or side of the housing; the blade slides out. On many vehicles the door keyhole is hidden under a plastic cap on the driver’s handle — pop it off with the tip of that blade. Expect the alarm to sound briefly when you open the door this way; starting the car normally silences it.
Once inside: sit down, close the door, and press the brake pedal firmly. Hold the fob flat against the START/STOP button — logo side facing out — and press the button while keeping the fob in contact. The car energizes the chip through a short-range antenna behind the button and reads it. On Ford, GM, and Chrysler-family vehicles there may instead be a marked slot in the center console, armrest, or cup holder.

Try the backup start before anything else. It answers the question in about thirty seconds and tells you whether you need a battery, a jump, or a locksmith.
Fob batteries normally last two to four years, but desert heat shortens that. A fob left on a dashboard or in a hot console gets cooked daily, and lithium cells lose output well before their rated life. If yours is a few years old and the range has been shrinking, replace the battery before it strands you — or have a spare fob ready.
